Pimp is Back!
This is the ONE you don’t want to miss and space is limited! Wednesday, April 21st, 5:30-9:00pm.

By popular demand, one of our industry’s favorite events is returning for an encore: It’s time for the 2nd annual ISES Portland “Pimp My Warehouse!” This year’s event, held on Wednesday, April 21st, will be held at the dinner hour, and will be even more feature-packed than last year.
For those of you who missed it last year, “Pimp My Warehouse” is a unique events industry networking opportunity, and a chance to see an ordinary warehouse turned into a fantastic showplace…. while have fun doing it! You’ll get to see the area’s top event producers in a collaborative effort to bring you a miraculously transformed space. And what a space it is; we’ve secured The Old Norm Thompson Warehouse, located at 1801 NW Thurman. It’s a blank canvas today, but you will be amazed when you see the what we have in store for it!
Not only will you be able to experience what can be done to an everyday empty warehouse, you’ll get to hear each vendor talk about how they did it, when we present our “super panel” discussion, an interactive presentation featuring all of our sponsor-vendors on stage together at one time. Dinner will be an array of food at several stations from Crave Catering, one of Portland’s premiere sustainable caterers.

Guest Writer for Portland Biz Connect e-zine
Sometime recently it dawned on me that as a Chef, I never really thought much about public speaking and writing. I mean, I have had my share of soap boxes, and this blogging thing seems harmless enough, but writing articles and speaking to public utility companies about Sustainability was not something I had previously considered. It’s been fun and interesting and a great process to grow and learn as well.
I had met Megan Doern from the Portland Business Alliance on an Alliance wine tour of Sokol Blosser Winery. During the bus ride we had chatted about the food, wine, the Alliance, and Sustainability. Megan mentioned about the Aliiance e-zine titled Small Biz Connection. She had said the August/September issue would feature agriculture and and sustainable farming. Well… one thing let to another (and a few glasses of wine later) and the next thing I know, I am a writing an article for them!

Go Green ’08 Cultivating Sustainable Business
Go Green 08
Cultivating sustainable business
GoGreen’08 was held at the Gerding Theater at The Armory in The Pearl District Portland, Oregon on October 1, 2008. The Armory has been certified by the U.S. Green Building Council as exceeding the requirements for designation as a LEED Platinum building.
The only conference of its kind, Go Green ‘08 gave tactical steps on how to “green” your business and build sustainability enlightenment amongst business owners. Attendees participated in panel discussions geared to provide solid takeaways and next steps to make any size of business sustainable. Conference topics included a showcase of Portland’s Best Sustainable Businesses featuring Best Business Award Winners, Green Marketing and Branding, Green Incentives Available to your Business and How to Win Media Coverage with Your Sustainability Initiatives. Event Sponsors included Metro (Recycle at Work and Drive Less, Save More), City of Portland’s Office of Sustainable Development, Portland Development Commission, Portland Tribune, Travel Portland and Sustainable Industries.
The GoGreen ‘08 mission is to bring the business community together to inspire and educate about the importance of sustainability in business while offering concrete next steps to make these new initiatives a reality.
The keynote speaker mayor elect Sam Adams kicked off the event by giving an inspiring state of green address. Noting that once again Portland has been declared the most Sustainable city in the US. Also noting that we have a long way to go to becoming truly sustainable especially if being compared to the Global community.
He talked about current infrastructure and its need for growth. Especially embracing electric vehicles and having charging stations throughout the area. The future must contain solutions to the current fuel crisis and that will come in the form of bio-fuels and electric vehicles.
Sam also announced the all new Portland Sustainability Institute. Located near the Rose Quarter just on East Broadway, and is set to open in early 2009. Find out more about it in Sam’s Blog at http://www.commissionersam.com/node/3665
The conference left me with many insights as well as MUCH more to ad to my ever growing to-do list. Never the less I am glad to have been a part of such an event.
I know as a company, Crave Catering has a long way to go as we go further down the Sustainable road, but at least we are on it and heading in the right direction. A few immediate actions we will be taking will be to discuss our energy consumption and look into renewable energy through PGE, also auditing our carbon footprint and looking at carbon offsets, as well as evaluating our “Food Miles.”
